A statement in support of racial justice and equality

The Center for Maghrib Studies (CMS) opposes unequivocally all forms of discrimination and actively supports racial equality and social justice.  As academics and members of CMS, we stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. CMS condemns police brutality and the senseless killing of Black citizens, like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks, and countless others who continue to go unnamed, unknown, and forgotten.

While not a new phenomenon, the rise in global and national media attention showcasing the senseless murders of Black, Indigenous and People of Color is indicative of a broken inequitable system. A system designed to benefit from the labor of minorities, but does not stand by the call for dignity and justice for all the people.

As civil rights protests erupt worldwide, we want to make clear that in no uncertain terms, that we support the end of institutionalized racism and disenfranchisement in the United States and the rest of the world. CMS adheres to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, upholding all ideals that center issues of inclusion, equality, equity, and diverse representation through collaborative scholarly activities between the US and the Maghrib.
