Ysé Auque-Pallez, a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Bordeaux/ Sciences Po Bordeaux, is currently affiliated with the “Africas in the World” laboratory (Les Afriques dans le Monde, LAM). In 2018, she completed her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and social sciences at Sorbonne-University and Sciences Po. In 2021, she obtained her master’s degree in international relations with a specialization in research and African studies from Sciences Po. She also had the opportunity to study African history, African philosophy, and Gender studies at the University of Ghana, based in Accra, from 2017 to 2018.
Ysé Auque-Pallez specializes in studying the sociology of collective mobilizations and the history of ideas, with a focus on Pan-Africanism. Her research on Pan-Africanism spans across different geographical, historical, and thematic areas, such as gender and sexuality, the restitution of African heritage, diaspora and migration, and religion. Initially, her work delved into Pan-Africanist movements in France, analyzing the trajectories, the discourses, and the mobilization strategies of their participants, and contextualizing these movements within the broader history of black movements in France. The results of this research were shared in a publication by the Chair of African Diasporas (LAM/ Sciences Po Bordeaux/ University of Bordeaux) in 2022.
She further explored the articulations between Pan-Africanism and gender as well as sexuality on one hand, and religion on the other, resulting in two articles for Politique africaine and the Centre Jacques-Berque Editions (2022; forthcoming). While working for the French Institute of International Relations (Ifri) in 2021, she conducted research on Pan-Africanist organizations’ efforts to advocate for the restitution of African heritage since the 1960s to the present day, publishing two articles for Politique étrangère (2022) and the Cahiers d’études africaines (2023).
From 2021 to 2022, she participated in a research project on Pan-Africanism in Morocco from 1955 to 1965, led by the Centre Jacques Berque based in Rabat. She is now dedicated to writing her thesis on Pan-Africanism in Morocco, spanning from 1955 to the present day, under the supervision of Jean-Noël Ferrié (Sciences Po Bordeaux/ LAM).
Concomitantly, she teaches the history of Pan-Africanism from the 18th century to today at Sciences Po Paris. She assists in the scientific coordination of the course “Nouvelles Comprehensions du Monde”, based on a transnational partnership between l’Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris, the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, the University Iba der Thiam of Thiès, and the Campus AFD. She serves as a reviewer for articles in Esquisses and Analecta Bruxellensia, and has contributed to organizing conferences and workshops for the African Studies Association Congress, the Young researchers in African studies (JCEA), and Sciences Po Bordeaux, among others.
