Maghrib Conference on Race, Gender and Migration

Organized by the Center for Maghrib Studies at Arizona State University, hosted by Morocco’s International Institute for Languages and Cultures (INLAC) and sponsored by the Centre international de recherches sur les esclavages et post-esclavages (CIRESC, CNRS, Paris) and URMIS (Nice Sophia Antipolis University)

December 15-17, 2019 Fès, Morocco

Notions of race and gender have always shaped the history of immigration to and emigration from the Maghrib, and did so long before the region was known by that name.  Despite the importance of these two interrelated factors in the ethnic and cultural history of the region, they have long been taboo in the local historical discourses, academia and popular culture. The history of the Maghrib is a story of people in motion who were subjected to conquest, displacement, colonization and enslavement as well as cosmopolitanism and hybridity.  Much of this history is documented but has until now escaped a rigorous scholarly attention.  This conference invites scholars to focus attention on the ways migrations based on race and gender have hybridized the Maghrib from the distant past to the present, including issues related to recent trans-Saharan migration bound for Morocco or the European Union.  This conference intends to foster a debate on race, gender and migration to raise awareness about inclusion and historical injustices.

The conference will also honor the achievements of the leading Africanist scholar Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch, who will give a keynote address.

The Program Committee will receive proposals starting April 22, 2019.  Proposals must include paper abstracts of approximately 100-200 words and bios of no more than 50 words.  The Call For Papers will close June 2, 2019 and acceptance notification is anticipated June 28, 2019.  Confirmation of attendance is required by July 1, 2019. Only accommodations and meals during the time of the conference will be provided.
